GOVERNOR DAVIS NAMES MEMBER TO THECALIFORNIA TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION
SACRAMENTO - Governor Gray Davis today announced the appointment of Robert J.
Abernethy as a member of the California Transportation Commission
Abernethy, 59, of Manhattan Beach, has served as president of Self Storage Management
Company and president of American Standard Development Company since 1974. He held various positions at the Hughes Aircraft Company from 1968 to 1974. He served
the United States Navy form 1963 to 1966.
Abernethy served as a director of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority from 1995 to
1998 and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California from 1988 to 1993. He also
served as a commissioner of the City of Los Angeles Telecommunications Commission from
1992 to 1993, vice chairman of the Los Angeles Economic Development Council from 1988 to
1993 and commissioner of the City of Los Angeles Planning and Zoning Commission from 1984
to 1988.
Abernethy earned a bachelors of arts degree in mathematics and electrical engineering
from John Hopkins University and a master of business administration from Harvard University Business School.
Members do not receive a salary. This position requires Senate confirmation.
