Road Charge Pilot Program Background Information
Caltrans operated the California Road Charge Pilot Program with more than 5,000 participant vehicles from July 2016 through March 2017. All participant accounts were closed on March 31, 2017. The State Transportation Agency is preparing a report detailing and evaluating the pilot program operations. The Transportation Agency report is statutorily due by June 30, 2018.
The Commission’s Road Charge Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) received regular updates on pilot operations throughout the nine-month program. The TAC is reviewing the lessons learned from the pilot program and will be recommending state and federal actions which may be taken in order to further develop a road charge system.
